This was quite interesting. Books like this, which are basically a "list" of historic events, can be rather dull. But this book is well written and a good read. My only "complaint", if you can even call it that, is that I wish the book had a map inside so I could follow along with where events took place. I did get out my humongous Portland map at one point, but it was rather hard to read with. A very enjoyable and educational read - glad I bought it.

It is easy to see that J.D. Chandler’s two great passions are crime and Portland, and in this book the two come together in a delicious “true crime” concoction. It may be that each generation of Portlanders largely imagine themselves as decent people living in an honest society"J.D. Chandler intends to blow the lid off this fantasy. Each gristly murder is laid out for the reader with the chilling detail of an autopsy. I recommend this book for anyone interested in hearing true stories of blood spilled in Portland’s sordid past.

This slim volume has some enlightning information about the history of my home town and how the relationship between the races evolved. The author presents the information in simple to understand language without being too graphic. It is fascinating to read chronologically about the way our city was divided early in its history. Some of the stories I had heard about but most were new to me. But perhaps the most intriguing is how and when the interaction of the races changed. A very good quick read. Mr Chandler has a new fan!
